Last week was our second meeting of the Winter Basketball pre-season. There's still plenty of good content to cover, so join us this week!
Week 2 Recap
Four Varsity Head Coaches joined us this week and responded to questions on officiating and the relationship to the officials on the floor. Coaches ranged in experience and team objectives for their respective programs. The Coaches panel included:
- Will Benson, Stevenson HS Boys' Coach
- Regan Carmichael, Stevenson Girls' Coach
- Steve Ikenn, Grayslake Central Girls' Coach
- Brian Frericks - Prairie Ridge Boys' Coach
The main take away from the Coaches Panel were their recommendations to Officials, including:
- Be consistent - as a crew, if you make the call in the first half of the game - be consistent throughout the game
- Be a communicator - be approachable to share information throughout the game
- Hussle - getting into proper position to officiate makes a big difference
The Coaches were very supportive of the job we do. Overall, if you do these things well, perceptions and ratings amongst our officials will improve!
The above session was lively and ran long, but Jerry Ming hung in there and concluded our meeting with a brief breakdown of a last-minute call that resulted in a crew losing their state series game assignments. Don't be that Official!
Week 3!
The next meeting is this Wednesday, October 21 from 7:00 to 8:30 pm at Vernon Hills High School.
This week we will feature Fred Allman. Fred is an Assigner, State Clinician and an IHSA Rules Interpreter. We are pleased that Fred will presents a session on Rules Changes, Points of Emphasis and the all-important Shock Clock administration. Come learn the latest in how the IHSA expects officials to manage through this most impactful change to the game.
Jason Boston will close our meeting with a session on "Working with your Crew." This will certainly provide a great perspective for newer and senior officials alike.
The remaining meeting agendas are listed below
Don't forget to join other officials (including Football and Flag) for a post meeting/post-game social following this week's meeting at 8:45 at Emil's Pizza in Mundelein. (604 N Lake St, Mundelein, IL 60060)
